FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where did the name mēle come from?

mēle is pronounced “meal” because mēle is the origin (aka etymology) of the word "meal” in Old-English and Dutch.  There are also additional root meanings of the word: “an edible ground substance” from the Middle Dutch language and “to grind” from Old Frisian.

What is in mēle?

Each mēle pack is made of all-natural fruits, vegetables, nuts, protein (plant-based or whey-based), and milk (coconut or dairy). Our ingredients are freeze dried and crushed into powder, which helps keep the delicious flavor and nutrients. The ingredients are then blended together to create a perfectly balanced meal. All you have to do is mix with water or your favorite type of milk.

What is NOT in mēle?

Our products are all non-gmo. We use absolutely no soy products, no added sugars, no preservatives, no trans fats, no artificial coloring, and no additives. The whey-isolate and milk ingredients in our whey-based shakes are from grass-fed, organic and hormone free cows.

Is mēle a protein shake?

It is so much more than that! While mele has 22+ grams of protein per serving, it also provides complex carbs, fibers, and healthy fats. Each serving gives you the complete nutrients you need to stay properly fueled. We think it’s great a protein supplement too and recommend for post-workout recovery.

How do I make mēle?

It takes less than 30 seconds and five steps to mix!

  1. Grab a shaker bottle.
  2. Add 4 ounces of water or milk.
  3. Add your mēle pack.
  4. Add another 4 ounces of water or milk.
  5. Shake & Enjoy!

We also think mēle is great in a blender! It gives it a frothy texture!

Why is there both a whey-based and a plant-based version?

Our original version of mēle was made using grass-fed whey isolate due to it’s high protein content and easy mixing with our all-natural ingredients! After requests from dairy-free customers, we decided to create our plant-based line. These shakes have the same delicious flavors, but we’ve swapped out our whey protein and milk for organic brown rice, pea proteins and organic coconut milk.

Ultimately, it’s up to you on which best suits your dietary needs, but here are some more details on each:

  • Whey-based:  We exclusively use grass-fed whey protein isolate (the purest form of whey), which is made from cold-pressed raw milk and contains 90% protein. Whey isolate protein is 99% lactose free, and ours is made only from hormone and grass-fed cows. Whey has been shown to assist the body in combating various diseases [Link] and positively affect the body's immune functions, such as antimicrobial activity. [Link] Click here to learn more about grass-fed whey.
  • Plant-based: Our organic brown rice protein and pea protein contains 80% protein and is a great alternative to soy and dairy-based proteins.  Our organic brown rice protein is made using an all natural fermenting and sprouting process that allows you to digest, absorb and utilize the protein and amino acids from the rice.  Our pea protein is highly soluble and easy to digest as well. It has 5x the amount of Arginine than whey protein. Arginine, or L-arginine, is an amino acid that is needed to keep the liver, skin, joints and muscles healthy!

Are there added sugars in mēle?

mēle contains no added sugar. All of the sugar content comes from the natural fruits and vegetables that make up mēle. Although large amounts of sugar in products like soda can be bad for you, the natural sugar in mēle is not harmful because of the high levels of fiber, which slows your body's absorption of the sugar. Will mēle keep me feeling full?

Yes! For a light meal, we suggest one serving of 250 calories.  For a more filling meal, we suggest two servings of 500 calories.  While everyone’s body is different, most of our customers are full for around 3-5 hours.

There is a key reason why our shakes keep you full longer -- they provide all of the macro-nutrients (ie. carbs, fats, and proteins) that our bodies should be getting.  With a balance of nutrients, your body takes its time digesting and processing - meaning longer fullness and more sustained energy!

What are macronutrients and how do you incorporate them into each mēle?

Macronutrients are the building blocks of a complete meal (complex carbs, healthy fats, and proteins). By combining these three powerhouse nutrients in the proper amounts, you are giving your body the best fuel to stay energized and digest slowly.  Added bonus: mēle also offers fibers, omegas and micronutrients (vitamins) to keep you feeling your absolute best.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends the following macronutrient ratios for adults: protein 10-35%, carbs 45-65% and fat 20-35% [Link].

Each of our shakes is made up of 30-35% protein, 40% carbohydrates, 25-30% fat. We opted for a slightly higher level of protein based on the benefits of a high protein diet. We also chose a slightly lower carbohydrate ratio because lower carbohydrates have been shown to increase weight loss and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. [Link]

Does mēle need to be refrigerated?

Nope!  One of the advantages to mēle is that there is no need for refrigeration. You can store your mēle pack in a cool, dry place for use whenever you need. Once you mix your mēle, you can refrigerate it for a few hours to keep it fresh.

What is the shelf life of a mēle pack?

mēle has a shelf life of up to a year while stored in a cool, dry place! Once the pack is opened, it will be fresh for up to a week. After you mix with water and/or milk and refrigerate, it will last up to 4-6 hours.

Why is mēle in a powdered-format and not premade as a liquid?

There are numerous benefits to a dried, powder product versus a premade liquid.

      1. A dried product inhibits the growth of pathogens (aka bacteria) which makes the product more shelf stable.
      2. The fruits and veggies are freeze-dried and/or dehydrated at peak ripeness which allows them to maintain color, flavor and nutrients.
      3. The powder format has the added benefits of being lighter, less bulky, and travel-friendly.
      4. The best part: by using a dried powder product, we don’t have to add any preservatives and there is no refrigeration necessary.  This makes mēle better for you and easier to take on-the-go.

How are the nutrients preserved when it’s freeze-dried or dehydrated?

Drying foods is by far the oldest and most common method of keeping food safe for long periods of time and maintaining the nutrients and flavor.  The freeze-drying and dehydrating process is a lengthy process, but very gentle on the produce. This technique allows us to protect the cellular structure of the raw material and retain the most color, flavor and nutrients. No additional additives or preservatives are necessary!

Before any of our fruits and vegetables are dried, they are hand-sorted, screened and sanitized to maintain the peak ripeness and freshness.  They are then moved into a freeze-drying chamber (or an air dryer) for over 22 hours before being crushed, sifted and prepared for blending in our recipes. The type of specific drying technique is dependent on the type of produce, superfood, herb or grain used.

What are the benefits of the high protein, fiber and omegas in mēle?

Protein: [22+ grams per serving] Studies have shown that higher protein consumption increases your metabolic rate and reduces appetite. [Link] [Link] Research has  also shown that a high protein diet can increase calories burned by up to 80 to 100 calories per day. [Link] [Link] [Link]. A high protein diet can also help reduce the regain of fat following weight loss. [Link][Link].

Fiber: [7+ grams per serving] mēle contains high amounts of fiber because it is made from freeze dried whole fruits and vegetables that are ground in order to retain all of the nutrients. Fiber has been shown to increase weight loss, [Link] reduce cholesterol, [Link] increase satiation (i.e. make you feel full), [Link] and improve insulin sensitivity and the secretion of certain gut hormones. [Link]

Omegas: [omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids] Omega-3s have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, [Link] [Link] reduce the symptoms of metabolic syndrome (a syndrome resulting in belly fat, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and high cholesterol), [Link] as well as lower inflammation and anxiety. [Link] Studies also show that Omega-3s possibly help fight dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, [Link] and even cancer. [Link]

What’s the deal with glycemic indexes and why are they important?

All foods are NOT created equal. Many of the foods we eat drain our energy and lead to mid-day crashes. most foods we eat are converted by the body into glucose, which provides the energy our brains need to function properly. The glycemic index of a food describes how the food affects your body’s blood sugar and insulin levels based on how quickly the carbohydrates in the food are converted into glucose in the human body. Pure sugar, for instance, has a glycemic index of 100. [Link]

LOW-GLYCEMIC foods are broken down slowly, trickling glucose into your system over time. This provides sustained, long-lasting energy, increased concentration and makes you feel fuller for longer. [Link]
HIGH-GLYCEMIC foods cause a sudden spike in your blood sugar, which leads to peaks and troughs in energy. [Link] The most important factor in preventing energy crashes is making healthy eating the easiest possible option.

This means having low-glycemic, high protein food (mēle) readily available so that you are able to conveniently re-fuel your body before your blood sugar bottoms out. [Link]

How can mēle help with my productivity?

Because we use whole fruits and vegetables, with high levels of protein and fiber, mēle is a fantastic source of nutrition that will provide you with sustained energy throughout the day.

      • The key is getting back to the basics: a balanced meal is one that provides carbs, fats, fibers, and proteins - this slows down the digestion process and keeps your energy levels steady.
      • Most of the main ingredients in mēle, like strawberries, almonds, peanuts, milk, wheatgrass, barley grass, flax seeds, and carrots have low glycemic index values of 55 or less out of 100. [Link]

Did you know that eating fruits and vegetables has also been linked to increased curiosity, creativity, general happiness and well-being?!

Eating a low-glycemic breakfast has also been associated with improved learning and scholastic performance. [Link] [Link]

Why doesn’t mēle contain any soy?

We are not fans of soy. Not only are they often genetically modified, but they have an estrogenic effect on our bodies.  While some can handle limited amounts (we still love soy sauce and edamame on occassion), there are some things to be aware of and avoid.  Read the nutritional label and if you see soy products added, put it back on the shelf. Fermented soy (miso soup, tempeh) is perfectly OK though!

Here’s why we avoided using soy in our products:

The consumption of soy, which includes a compound called isoflavones, has been linked to many negative health consequences, including decreased thyroid function and disruption of estrogen levels. [Link] [Link]

Soy has also been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and a disrupted, delayed or prolonged menstruation in women. [Link] [Link] In men, soy has been linked to decreased sperm counts and decreased testosterone. [Link] [Link]
